PROJECT: GREAT GATSBY GETAWAY
Studying design and doing consultant work has allowed me to dive into styles I wouldn’t have explored otherwise. Living in Stratford, Ontario, where the renowned Stratford Festival Theatre operates, has afforded an explosive art scene that is unheard of for most small cities. A recent project for a retired actress and her set designer husband afforded me an unbelievably fun opportunity to design their condo. They are true lovers of the theatre and the arts, so it is no surprise that their preferred style is Art Deco. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” paints an exquisite picture of this Jazz Age period in art history. Art Deco is a “glamorous, modern design style that flourished in the 1920s and 30s, characterized by geometric shapes, bold colours, and luxurious materials.” (source: Art Story) This style evokes opulence. It’s futuristic as it tapped into the industrial momentum post-WWII.
The goal was to design a space that honours their preferred design style, making intentional references whilst making it relevant for 2026 to avoid looking like one of the client’s set designs. Here is a sneak peek at a modern Great Gatsby Getaway.
