Project: Brickhouse
This project is for a musician couple who live in an industrial-style condo. The objective was to e-design a high-impact urban-industrial space infused with softness, resulting in a cohesive, comfortable space with a wow-factor, making the most of every inch. It may be small, but there was a tall order to create a show-stopper finished product.
The most dominant style in this condominium is urban-industrial. This is depicted through exposed brick, black-grid modern windows and doors and stainless-steel backsplash. The overall design has leaned into this style, yet softness has been infused to ensure that it doesn’t feel cold, flat or one-dimensional, using grass cloth on the ceiling, earth-tones and swapping out the closet doors for a retractable linen curtain matching the window treatments. Knowing how to commit to a style but also knowing when to make a contradictory selection can result in a more curated and sophisticated design. The overall style should still be apparent to avoid a discombobulated finished product. As an example, the foyer decor includes a Japanese shou-suga ban stool and a Gothic mirror. This communicates that this industrial loft isn’t a cookie-cutter expression of its neighbouring units.
The colour palette is warm to create that cozy feeling the client is seeking. Urban-industrial spaces, like modern spaces, are often cooler in colour temperature, yet there has been an intentional departure to suit the brick through colour and texture.
Here is a sneak peek at the mood boards for Project Concrete Canvas. The clients also received a detailed CAD floor plan, 3-D renderings, a full budget breakdown and inventory sheets.
